The Last Seed is a reimagination of the old-school flash game called soap bubble. You play as a fragile dandelion seed trying to escape a cave and make its way outside.

The Last Seed was the first game I worked on as part of the Aalto Game Design and Production major. I worked in a team of 3 and the goal was to clone a pre-existing game and change some mechanics, or visuals or both. We chose a flash game called Soap Bubble that follows the journey or a small fragile soap bubble as it tries to escape a factory. We decided that the game was small enough to be well within our scope and also experiment with narrative design and environmental storytelling.
I was the programmer and designer on the team. I collaborated with both my team members in terms of planning what the core gameplay beats would be and how the player journey would progress. As a programmer I did the character controller, technical art, lighting and mechanic design.
I spent a while developing and tuning the character controller to nail its game feel. Unlike platformer games where the character is supposed to feel responsive and snappy, I wanted our little dandelion fluff to feel light, fragile and floaty, as if every movement is a small struggle against the world. One small thing I added to support this is that there is a small water in the game and if the player crashes into it, they would die. But if they gently move to it and rest on it, they will be fine. These small details helped establish the nature and physicality of the world and our character. Working with camera transitions and scene framing further helped build the cinematic feel of the game.
I collaborated with the amazing artists to implement their designs. In addition, I helped them with the basics of the engine and version control, and worked together with them to implement their features. Where possible, my goal was not to just take their assets and add them in the game, but rather to support them in being independent and help them feel comfortable directly working with the project.
The Last Seed ended up being a 5 minute gameplay experience. It’s one of my older project but I still like to present it as a highlight because this was the first time I felt like I had made a complete exprience with a proper beginning, middle and end. Happy with how things worked out and super grateful to my teammates and everyone who played the game.
One thing I would say is that we got so deep into building a impactful climax that we forgot that dandelions bloom in spring and not in autumn. We only realized that when a player pointed it out, but hey, maybe these are magic dandelions xD
